Not sure if this is just me, but the current war in Israel is bringing out extreme levels of empathy, concern, and deep sadness for me. While Judaism teaches us to value and cherish life, to seek peace, and to work toward justice for all people, it's hard to consider justice for people who have been harming Jews from the first day.
Recently, its been hard to navigate and respond to the pain that is felt for those affected by this war. Judaism offers us the power of prayer. That we can engage in heartfelt prayers for peace. In Judaism there is a great emphasis placed on the power of prayer and how it can bring about a positive change. We can use prayer as a means to connect with the Divine and to seek comfort, solace, and resolution.
In this very difficult time, my heart breaks daily for the people, and it's harder and harder for find strength for fostering unity.
Recent personal events have caused me to take on additional heartbreak that was very unexpected. Dealing with a heartbreak is a universal human experience, and Judaism offers wisdom and guidance to help us navigate through such a difficult time.
Regardless if its a romantic, familial, or friendship heartbreak, it is still challenging and emotionally draining. Judaism values, respects, and honors all relationships, and we acknowledge that each heartbreak will have its own complexities.
Setting boundaries is critical. If a parent or a family member is bringing you emotional distress, it is critical to separate yourself from the abuse or harm. We must value our self-preservation and focus on maintaining our emotional well-being. Boundaries can be crucial to protecting yourself from further farm while still maintaining a level of respect.
If it's a romantic heartbreak, focus on personal growth. Use this difficult experience as an opportunity for self-reflection and change. Judaism teaches us that challenges can serve as a catalyst for personal transformation and resilience. Explore avenues for personal development, like engaging in acts of kindness, pursuing new interests, or deepening spiritual practices.
When we experience heartbreak, we should try our best to embrace hope. Judaism instills the importance of maintaining hope even amidst pain and adversity. The prophet Jeremiah expresses this beautifully, saying, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11).
We should also take responsibility for our own actions. We can only control our own behavior, not the actions or treatment of others. Focus on your own actions and responses, striving to act with integrity, empathy, and forgiveness, while still prioritizing your own well-being.
If you feel comfortable and safe, consider having an open and honest conversation with the loved one who is hurting you. Choose a calm and respectful setting, expressing your feelings and needs while being mindful of the other person's perspective. It is important to communicate assertively without resorting to attacking or blaming language.
And always practice forgiveness. While forgiveness may be a difficult path to walk, it can offer a sense of liberation and emotional healing. Judaism places significant emphasis on the value of forgiveness, both for the sake of personal growth and for repairing damaged relationships. Just remember that forgiveness does not mean condoning harmful behavior or allowing oneself to become a perpetual victim. Rather, it is ac active process of letting go of resentment and finding inner peace. Judaism values well-being, dignity, and healthy relationships.
Healing takes time, and everyone copes differently. Approach your journey with self-compassion and patience, knowing that Judaism offers a rich tapestry of teachings that can provide comfort and support during times of heartbreak.
And remember that whatever you gave the day today, it was your best, and that's enough.
